What exactly is a crown and why would one be needed?
A crown is a protective cap that goes over a tooth to help strengthen it. Think of a thimble that is shaped like a tooth, and that is essentially what it is.
Getting a crown involves making sure any old fillings, cavities, and cracks are removed from the tooth, and then re-shaping the tooth to make room for the crown. Then an impression will be taken of the prepared tooth which will be sent to a dental laboratory to have a custom made crown. A temporary crown is made to be worn until the final crown comes back from the lab.
The laboratory will use the impression to make a crown. The crowns and bridges in our office are made by a very talented laboratory technician in Virginia who will personally fabricate your crown to make sure it is of the highest quality. None of the lab work in our office is outsourced overseas.
A second visit is scheduled to have the crown placed.
There are a few different reasons a crown would be needed. Some of the most common reasons are:
- A cavity that is too big to fill with a filling
- A tooth that is cracked
- A root canal has been done on a tooth
Dental Bridges
Bridges are very similar to crowns, except for instead of one crown, it is 3 or more crowns connected together to fill in the space from missing teeth.
